Township Committee Meeting

Single-stream recycling

Many commissions and committees are operating on limited schedules for the summer months, but there were some topics of interest raised at the meeting. One issue raised was the possibility of the town converting to “single-stream” recycling. This process would eliminate the need for residents to presort their recyclables; they would combine all material–paper, cans, plastic, glass–for pick up. These unsorted materials would then be picked up by one truck.

The concept of “single-streaming” recycling is still being debated within the recycling industry. As recycling becomes more profitable for processors, there is increased competition and debate as to the true value of single-stream recycling. Some processors contend that single-stream recycling leads to an increase in rejected material, higher operating costs, and a degraded end product. Other processors argue that it is more economical and environmentally friendly because only one truck is required to make a run for pickups.

The single-stream system usually results in an increase in recycling by residents. Besides being environmentally responsible, this would also reduce the amount of solid waste being carted away. The single-stream process has found favor with environmental activists such as NRDC, but it has also led to some recycling processors reducing the percentage of profit shared with the municipalities. This requires each municipality to examine if the process is right for their individual situation and determine if single-streaming is appropriate for their community.

Another item of interest were plans to discuss extending the recreational camp for an additional two weeks. The camp had a very successful season for a five week period this year, and their is interest in extending the program next year. Many residents are apparently forgoing vacations, or limiting their driving, and the Wyckoff recreational camps offered quality activities close to home. It was also a major benefit for households where both parents work, or for single parents, as the camps provide a structured, positive environment. The Township Committee took time to note the efforts put forth to make this summer season a success for the children of Wyckoff, and extended a communal thanks to all the workers and volunteers.

On a final note, the delayed tax bills should be arriving in the mail shortly.

Below is an update on present recycling standards:
