One of the most effective baseball pitchers in the history of Tulane University is also a native of Wyckoff, NJ; he also has a classic baseball name, Shooter Hunt. Offspring of RHS coach Mickey Hunt, this native son was was drafted with the supplemental first round by the Minnesota Twins in day one of the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
Hunt was ranked the 11th-best prospect and fourth-best pitcher by Baseball America; opponents batted .175 against him. He originally started his college career in Virginia, but transferred to Tulane with the help of Twins scout John Wilson who covers this region for The Twins and had seen Hunt pitch on a traveling team. According to Deron Johnson, The Twins scouting director,”He’s got a really good curveball … his curveball is his best pitch. He’s throws up to 93, and he’s another good makeup kid. Very aggressive. Very competitive.”
Interestingly enough, the name “Shooter” was inspired by a the basketball movie Hoosiers. Mickey Hunt thought it was a great nickname, and so it was bestowed on his first born son.
